In
the valley formed by the west side of Taylors' Ridge just south
of Summerville-Trion lies serene James
H. "Sloppy" Floyd State Park. The loudest thing you'll
hear on this lake is the swoosh of a fishing pole and the "plop"
of the bait hitting the water, or a soft "glug, glug, glug"
from a paddleboat you can rent from the park office. |
| The 100-foot, 73-ton
Summerville Railroad Turntable, formerly used by CSX RR in Birmingham,
AL, was installed in Summerville, GA and is used exclusively by
Tennessee Valley RR steam locomotives during Dixie
Land Excursions. The turntable was trucked from Birmingham to
LaFayette, GA, and then transferred to a rail flatcar for movement
to Summerville. |

Chiseled by wind,
water, ice, and gravity, Cloudland
Canyon is Georgia's most mystically named state park. West and
south of Chattanooga, the park features hiking, camping, swimming,
and even tennis. |
| The
Silver Comet Trail is Georgia's most ambitious rails-to-trails
project. It was named for a train that used the identical route
from 1947 to 1968. The Silver Comet originated in Boston and ran
through Atlanta on the way to its final destination in Birmingham,
AL. |

| The Reverend Howard
Finster preached his heart out to his family, friends, and anyone
who would listen, until his feeble body of 84 years could take no
more. He is still preaching today through the art and prints that
he left behind. See his work at Finster
Folk Art in Paradise
Gardens. |

gallons. |

DeSoto
State Park covers more than 3,000 acres along Little River atop
Lookout Mountain. The
river, extending more than 35 miles, is the longest of only a few
in the nation that forms and flows on a mountaintop for its entire
length. |
| WEISS

Lookout Mountain
is known for a unique weather phenomenon. Sometimes, after a clear
dawn, a layer of fog descends toward the valley below, stopping
about halfway down the peak. It was on a fateful day, November 24,
1863, that this weather anomaly set in, creating the most poetic
name for any battle in the American Civil War: The
Battle Above the Clouds. |
| Between 1890 and
1899 the Congress of the United States authorized the establishment
of the first four national military parks. The first and largest
of the first four, and the one upon which the establishment and
development of most other national military and historical parks
was based, was Chickamauga
Battlefield Park. |
